Jose is an independent fisheries consultant and founding partner of Naunet Fisheries Consultants, a consultancy firm based in Norwich (UK). He holds a degree in Biology and marine sciences and postgraduate studies in Biostatistics and Sustainable Development.
Jose has more than 15 years of experience working in a wide range of projects related to marine biodiversity and the sustainable use of living aquatic resources. He started his career working as a commercial and scientific fisheries observer and as a fisheries scientist in research centres in Spain and Portugal. Since then, Jose has worked as Aquaculture expert, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultant and Independent Fisheries Consultant. During these experiences, his work has focused on collecting and analysing data and developing initiatives to improve the management of marine resources and the living conditions in coastal communities.
Jose is currently working as an independent fisheries expert for several certification and rating programs including: the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)), the Marin Trust – Marine ingredients organization, the Monterey Bay Aquarium – Seafood Watch program, the UK Marine Conservation Society – Good Fish Guide program and other rating programs. He has assessed more than 300 fisheries in recent years which has given him a very good knowledge about international fisheries, their impacts on habitats, species, ecosystem and livelihoods; fisheries management; and related issues such as food security, IUU fishing, MCS and human rights abuses.
