SUMMARY:Source for Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:The Marine Stewardship Council now sets the global standard for eco-certified fisheries. It is estimated that 15% of the global seafood catch is now certified to MSC-certified standards. Challenges remain for wild seafood certification\, and the industry in many ways represents some of the current for eco-certification overall. Two major challenges remain\, including how To increase the representation of small scale vessels as a larger percentage of the certified catch and how to establish price premium for the verified catch that is not certified. This panel explores the underlying market dynamics and actors within the seafood supply chain as a case study for exploring the challenges in pushing mainstream adoption of eco-certification. \nPanelists are Rupert Howes (MSC)\, Ryan Bigelow (Monterey Bay Aquarium)\, Omar Alfi (Pacifico Aquaculture) and Herman Wisse (GSSI). \nThe webinar recording “Pricing and Access – Challenges in Mass Adoption in the Seafood Market” is available here.

SUMMARY:Seafood2030 Virtual Sustainability Forum - "Aligning Industry and Government Sustainability Efforts"
DESCRIPTION:During the two-day event\, GSSI led an online session on “Supporting Industry Investment in Healthy Workers and Communities”. \nGSSI has grown to be one of the biggest global public-private partnerships in the seafood sector in just seven years. GSSI’s partnership aligns global efforts and resources to address seafood sustainability challenges.\nThe wide application of GSSI’s Global Benchmark Tool for seafood certification schemes proves that GSSI’s tools and sector engagement strategies deliver successful solutions underpinned by internationally accepted codes and guidelines.\nKey speakers in this session shared how GSSI’s core principles are now applied in the social arena through the development of a seafood-specific social benchmark tool and the Seafood MAP program. Together\, we will look to the future and discuss how these programs will help align industry and government sustainability efforts towards delivery of the Agenda 2030 and more sustainable seafood for everyone. \nPanelists are Peter Hajipieris (Regal Springs Group)\, Adriana Sanchez (Iberostar Hotels & Resorts) and Audun Lem (FAO).

SUMMARY:Launch of Seafood MAP
DESCRIPTION:Launch of Seafood MAP\nGlobal Industry Program to Accelerate Sustainable Seafood\nFollow online the launch of a new GSSI program. Securing healthy food and decent work for an estimated 10 billion people on the planet by 2050 presents new challenges as well as fresh business opportunities. Making seafood more sustainable and production more reliable will promote collective profits\, with sustainable sector growth reaching new customers in Africa\, Asia and Latin America. \nHow do we move towards sustainability in markets where there are gaps when it comes to the right incentives? Where do we leverage investments to equip small-scale producers with the latest knowledge tools? How do we work together towards well-managed fisheries and aquaculture production systems on a global scale? \nDuring the expert-led panel\, we will launch and discuss the development of a new program from GSSI and IDH\, the Sustainable Trade Initiative. \nSeafood MAP – Measuring and Accelerating Performance of global seafood supply – supports non-certified local seafood producers to become more sustainable. A joint roadmap and common language based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and FAO Guidelines will allow both producers and investors to support non-certified fisheries and aquaculture to meet the growing global demand for seafood\, sustainably.

Discussions will be supplemented by the results of GSSI and IDH’s 2017 strategic study conducted by external consultancy NewForsight\, as well as the results of GSSI’s 2018 Strategic Partner Survey in which partners were asked to provide their views on which global seafood sustainability challenges GSSI is well positioned to address. \nPanellists \n\nHerman Wisse\, Managing Director\, Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) \nDr. Darian McBain\,  Global Director of Sustainable Development\, Thai Union \nJennifer Dianto Kemmerly\,  Director of Global Fisheries and Aquaculture\, Monterey Bay Aquarium \nDaniel Underkoffler Jr.\, Senior Buyer\, Sam’s Club
