Development of the Global Benchmark Tool

The components of the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool are being developed according to the following key steps:

  1. Initial Draft of the Global Benchmark Tool - In 2013 and 2014, the Expert Working Groups have developed initial drafts of the Benchmark Framework and the Benchmark Process. These documents have been approved and released by the GSSI Steering Board for two public consultations and a pilot testing period.
  2. First Consultation Period - The consultation included a series of consultation workshops and webinars as well as online outreach for gathering stakeholder comments. Based on a review of the comments received a summary of the major issues that require particular attention during the pilot testing period were prepared.
  3. Revised Draft of Global Benchmark Tool - The Expert Working Groups used input from the first consultation period to develop a revised draft of the Global Benchmark Tool.
  4. Pilot Testing Program - The pilot testing program was conducted with eight seafood certification schemes worldwide using the revised draft of the Benchmark Tool, and gave particular attention to major issues that resulted from the first consultation period. In the pilot testing program helped to pressure test the key steps of the Benchmark Process and to assess the applicability of the Components in the Benchmark Framework.
  5. Second Consultation Period - The second consultation period will included webinars and electronic outreach for gathering stakeholder comments and will last 60 days from April to June 2015. 
  6. Final draft of Global Benchmark Tool - The Expert Working Groups used input from the second consultation period and pilot testing to develop a final draft of the Global Benchmark Tool.
  7. Launch Global Benchmark Tool -  The final draft of the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool was presented to the Steering Board for final approval in September 2016, after which it was launched and is now open for seafood certification schemes to apply for benchmarking.
