Public Consultation: Benchmark Report for the GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certification System

On January 31, 2018, GSSI launched a 30-day public consultation on the GSSI Benchmark Report for the GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certification System.

GLOBALG.A.P. applied for GSSI recognition of its GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certification System in April, 2017, and has been benchmarked against the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool on:

  • Section A (Governance),
  • Section B (Operational Management),
  • and Section C (Aquaculture - Finfish & Crustacean Farms and Salmon Farms standards).

GSSI invites comments on the recommendation of the Benchmark Committee to recognize the GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certification System after the Independent Experts and the Benchmark Committee found the scheme to be in alignment with all the GSSI Essential Components. 

The recommendation and the Benchmark Report are the intermediary result of the Benchmark Process. It included a Desktop Review and Office Visit by our Independent Experts, and a Benchmark Committee Meeting to review the draft Benchmark Report. A GSSI Steering Board Liaison has overseen the process to ensure its neutrality and objectivity.

Following the public consultation, the Benchmark Committee, Independent Experts and GLOBALG.A.P. will together address all comments received. GSSI's Benchmark Committee will then provide the Steering Board with a final recommendation on recognition.   • Download the Public Comment Form. Please add your name and organization in the header of Column J titled “Public Consultation”. Insert comments on specific Benchmark Results (Conclusions) in the corresponding row.
  • Return the Excel file and any additional comments you may have by March 1 to secretariat@ourgssi.org

About GLOBALG.A.P.

GLOBALG.A.P. began in 1997 as EUREPGAP, an initiative by retailers belonging to the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group. British retailers, working together with supermarkets in continental Europe, become aware of consumers’ growing concerns regarding product safety, environmental impact and the health, safety and welfare of workers and animals. To reflect both its global reach and its goal of becoming the leading international G.A.P. standard, EUREPGAP changed its name to GLOBALG.A.P. in 2007.

GLOBALG.A.P. today is the world's leading farm assurance program, translating consumer requirements into Good Agricultural Practice in a rapidly growing list of countries – currently more than 120.

The GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard was developed based on the FAO Technical Guidelines on Aquaculture Certification. This ensures that the four pillars of this guideline are covered:

  • Food safety: The GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard is the only standard at farm level for aquaculture practices recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative – GFSI.
  • Environmental Criteria: Includes biodiversity and protected areas.
  • Animal Welfare Criteria: Version 5, released on June 2015, saw animal welfare criteria for aquatic species be included in more in detail.
  • Social Practices: In addition to the workers Occupational Health and Safety, the risk assessment of social practices has become imperative. This means, the whole production chain is verified on social practices and the outcome is available to all market participants.

For a product to claim GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture certified status at point of sale, the full production chain needs to be certified. Certification of compound feed, hatcheries, grown-on farms, and chain of custody ensure verified traceability from farm to plate.
